Artist biography
Javier Mariscal
“In 2050, I will be 100 years old “
Valencian by birth, Barcelona by adoption and a citizen of the world.
Mariscal’s life is a love story with drawing. The Mediterranean, the lagoon, the light, the friends, the bars, the streets, the passion for life have marked his artistic career. From a young age, his gaze towards the world imagines shapes, stories and characters that escape from any label and stereotype, always showing his particular vital universe, full of stories, characters, funny calligraphies and his distorted lines that break limits.
Painter, designer, comic book artist… he works in all kinds of artistic supports and disciplines: graphic design, landscaping, painting, sculpture, Illustration, animation, product design, interior design, multimedia; without ceasing to betray his identity as a cartoonist. His great speciality is drawing, that is why his attitude to any commission is artistic, using a universal and timeless language that adds value, uniqueness and emotion to his proposals. His audacity goes hand in hand with the great challenges he has taken on, from the mascot of the Barcelona Olympic Games to the global design of a luxury hotel, the illustration of the covers of the New Yorker, El País and the Japanese Apo or the creation of the animated film Chico & Rita with Fernando Trueba, winner of a Goya and nominated for the Oscars for best animated film.
Awarded the “Nacional de Diseño” award, member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, he exhibits at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, participates in Kassel Documentary and has several retrospective exhibitions in centers such as the London Design Museum, La Pedrera or in South Korea.
Mariscal is currently working on preliminary drawings for “They Shot the Piano Player”, an animated documentary film co-directed with Fernando Trueba, a comic about the formation of our planet and the creatures that live on it, a book about Havana and just launched the Los Angeles travel diary for the French brand Louis Vuitton. His international projection and media impact accompany him in his conferences and workshops around the world.
